Student Ambassadors at KIPP Denver Collegiate High School welcomed Richard Barth, KIPP Foundation CEO, and Angela Cobian, Denver Public Schools District 2 Representative, with a tour of their school and a question & answer session. During those visits, the student ambassadors discussed student culture, purpose, and the steps they are taking in climbing the mountain to and through college.
For 10th grade student, Cristian, the opportunity to personally welcome Richard Barth affirmed his sense of leadership and confidence.
“I feel like I can do anything right now,” Cristian said. “It was my first time doing a tour and meeting with someone in such a high position. He’s a really nice guy and very helpful. It went better than I expected and I feel like I can talk to anyone right now.”
Student Ambassadors at KIPP Denver Collegiate High School meet once a week to work on their public speaking skills and learn about leadership and advocacy. In order to understand how leadership roles benefit communities through representation and advocacy, they apply their skills providing tours of the school to community members and elected officials.
Jasmine, an 11th grade student, participated in both tours and was thrilled to be able to connect with leaders who exemplify different forms of representation.
“The tour with Mr. Barth was motivational,” she said. “I think it’s helpful for him to know about how we feel about KIPP, but it’s also helpful for me and my future to be able to tell him what I want. The tour with Ms. Cobian was inspirational, she was so relatable and she talked to us about how to make change and be leaders in our own paths.”
Angela Cobian was the keynote speaker for KIPP Denver Collegiate High School’s graduation ceremony.
Cobian also toured KIPP Sunshine Peak Academy with fifth grade student AJ, who proudly led the tour in spanish and brought her into her classroom as her class prepared for a field trip.
“I had a great tour by AJ–future president of the United States–before the sixth graders went on a tour to the Colorado History Museum,” Cobian said. “So much fun!”
Student Ambassador clubs exist at KIPP Northeast Denver Middle School, KIPP Northeast Denver Leadership Academy, and KIPP Denver Collegiate High School.
